Forty-seven years ago, proud and enthusiastic Guyanese embraced the freedom bestowed by the declaration of independence with spirit and great determination. A determination that stems from the fact that the people of this great country of ours had won the sovereign right to chart their own destiny, the freedom to make their own decisions, create their own rules and govern themselves without interference. However, let us not forget that the struggle for freedom in Guyana started centuries ago to break the chains of slavery; this struggle was then undertaken by the labor movement over a century ago and eventually by local politicians with a refined mandate for independence from British Colonial rule. The end of 164 years of British Colonial rule was greeted with days of celebration, pomp and ceremony. But being an independent nation and having the choice and liberty to pave the desired road called for great thinking minds. To lead a multi-racial, multi-religious, multi-cultural nation demands mature, tolerant enlightened, inclusive and restrained leadership. This leadership should be non-partisan putting the national interest of decent law abiding citizens first and foremost.Today, the strings that bound our common humanity in cohesive decision making have become frayed, tattered and worn. Widespread enthusiasm has been dashed and deflated by wholesale corruption in highest offices; where suppression and abuse compromises freedom; where there is deliberate exploitation and inequity resulting in inhumane disparity in standards of living; where the rule of law is trampled upon; where lawlessness and political interference is rampant; where quantity is preferable to quality; where quality health care is compromised; where respect for our neighbors is nonexistent in our society.Reflecting on our struggle and our experiences, we must recognize that there have been significant departures from the goals and objectives that were intended and the sacrifices of our forefathers. The Guyana Public Service Union as a trade union is concerned and disappointed about the erosion of agreements that were entered into and the undermining of worker’s rights, privileges and benefits particularly by those politicians whose very success can be attributed to the support of organized labor.On May 26, after forty seven years, we, as Guyanese must put aside our racial, religious, political and economic differences and aim for common goals whereby everyone can benefit equally. Together we must put an end to the decay and the decline that is affecting us and unite to restore the entitlements won by our forefathers and pave the way to enhance actions in the interest of working class people. As a people, it should be our proud responsibility and committed obligation to protect our country and its image. We should be loyal patriots and support democratic policies that are just, evenhanded and in the interest of all Guyanese. We must ensure that those we elect to safeguard our nation’s well-being, faithfully fulfill the mandate given. We must not sit idly by and watch a marginal few create the basis of chaos and mayhem, while allowing our country to disintegrate.It is the hope that as a nation, unique as our own, we can find compromise; we can become creative thinkers; cultivate a culture of enlightenment,Cheap NHL Jerseys China, fair-mindedness and evenhandedness and etch out an understanding approach to the multi-faceted governance issues that currently exist. We can be flexible and visionary; we can increase our thoughtful, compassionate and caring nature.
