(By Alex Wayne)Georgetown is indeed an interesting city with many historical sites and location quite worthy of mention. However, one community within its environs that really caught my attention was Alberttown, which is divided into six separate sections by streets adjoining it to the other locations within Georgetown.Visiting Alberttown several years ago, the community was one that cried out loudly for modern civilization and was widely known as an area where some measure of violence and to some extent the drug trade, was prevalent. Now, while police intervention has reduced clashes between families and street groups, and of course lessened the incidents of the drug trade, the community has experienced rapid development and inhabitants have now become much more independent and are even more acquainted with the changes of modernisation.Groceries, variety stores, hair and beauty salons have sprung up in the community, while nightclubs and mini night pubs offer entertainment.Bakeries, and taxi services give the community the kind of needed independence, even as several Chinese and Creole restaurants allow persons to satisfy their eating whims and fancies.Let’s examine this community by stages beginning with the popular First Street at which the more elite of society and conservative residents are located. This area is normally quiet and hardly would one see children running around as is prevalent in other sections of the community. Here and there a few persons may be seen traversing that area, but the majority of residents prefer to remain indoors,Bruce Bowen Jersey, catching up on academic studies,Cheap Nike Shoes Wholesale, watching television or engaging in some form of constructive or educative activity. Some residents are only seen when boarding vehicles to their various work sites or to conduct other business while occasionally, a group of young men can be caught liming at a liquor store, or having a few beers as they discuss current affairs, or ways of making fast money.Things are almost the same in Second and Third Streets. This leaves Fourth Street for a thorough examination. This section of the Alberttown community is in direct contrast to the first three. Most of the time,Vans Old Skool Usa Sale, Fourth Street is a buzz of activity with young men either walking around aimlessly,Braden Holtby Jersey, or children playing in the street at times. This section also houses the famous YY Yard, which is actually a location, occupied by a number of squatters who have made a little shantytown of their own. While a towering zinc wall protects it, it is said that one can acquire just about anything from within its interior, even succulent fish and chips provided by a resident. Before time, the police, with a major station located at the junction of Fourth and Albert Streets, were known to pounce unexpectedly on this location, since it has always been alleged that a thriving drug trade existed within its environs.Things seemed to have simmered at this location, or so it appears.Fourth Street, Alberttown also houses the famous Ark Pet Shop at which citizens from within and outside of Georgetown would acquire their pet supplies,Discount Falcons Jerseys, medications and special treatment and advice for their various pets. Many have argued and I would like to think that Fifth Street, though not the most developed location, is however the most humorous. Just ahead of this street are the A-1 Muffler,China Jerseys, Radiator Record and Repair Shop with the De General taxi service just a few rods away to the left of the street. Well one would expect that this taxi service be more concerned with providing prompt and reliable service as is expected, but the drivers seem more focused on verbally tormenting those occupying the nearby Sylvannie Hotel which is now converted to an apartment home for city dwellers.Right across the street from this taxi service is the DHL Express entity,Andre Johnson Jersey, which takes care of export and import of important letters and packages for residents and persons in surrounding areas. The D& J Shipping Service office is also located in this street. Before time, this structure offered much fun and frolic for residents since the former landlord was popular for his early morning drunken ranting and raving in his efforts to collect the rental fees from his tenants. He claimed that they always came with mystifying stories of why they could not pay the rent on time. The building is now under new management and things seem to be in order as there is rarely an eruption in its interior.Fifth Street was popular for the family brawls, which saw households coming against each other in raucous verbal and sometimes physical battles. There was also a special gang that frequented this street, always ready to ‘beat up’ on vulnerable or feeble individuals. Police intervention has quieted them and things are reasonably peaceful. The Thumps Up Beauty Salon that is popular for its excellent pedicures and makeovers. The alcove of every entertainment lies at the junction of Fifth and Light Streets in the form of the Blue Iguana Night Club most famous for its creative weekend concept parties. While in the past, this club has sparked a lot of controversy, entertainment these days are clean and incident free. Villagers can access fresh bread and pastries at the Graham’s Bakery on Cummings Street and also gather for relaxation and consumption of alcohol at the Pink Shop.Drivers can stock up on their vehicular supplies at Tony’s Auto Shop in Light Street, while all arrangements for wedding and birthday caterings are handled by the ‘Just Cakes’ entity on Cummings Street.Residents and moreso the women of Alberttown no longer have to rush to the city to have their hair styled or to do facials since the Thumps Up Beauty and Abbey’s Nail and Hair Salon sprung up recently on Cummings Street. This street also houses the Charisma Styles Boutique for female clothing and Julia’s Restaurant and Bar which features some of the most exquisite cuisine in a most provocative and cozy setting.Residents now only have to walk a few yards to obtain glass windows and other related items at the Royal Glass and Aluminum Works establishment located on Cummings Street, Alberttown. This street is also the home for the Dancing Days Clothing Store where residents can get gents and female attire at reduced prices. Added to that, there is the Harry’s Parlour and Variety Store, Barron Foods for every imaginable kitchen ingredient, and the Bish and Sons establishment for grocery and other household items.Youths are now able to surf the Internet at the JT Online Internet Café on Cummings Street. There are many other special entities too numerous to mention, but definitely dictate that Alberttown is transcending into modern rapid civilization, since many others are popping up all over. |
